My name is Mary Cozean. I've been playing violin since age 10. My grandfather had been a violinist with the St. Louis Philharmonic Orchestra. He was thrilled that one of his grandchildren wanted to learn and gave his violin to me. I knew by age 15 that I wanted to be a music teacher. I have a Bachelor of Music degree from Queens University of Charlotte and took graduate level classes at Boston Conservatory of Music. I also earned a Moderate Special Needs Certification and Master of Education degree .Member of Suzuki Association of the Americas and American String Teachers Association. Over the years, I've played in various school and community orchestras. I've always wanted to raise up an army of little string players to take over the world. In my spare time, I practice judo and help coach the beginner judo class at our dojo. I also do yoga and read tons of British crime novels.
Music has always been a big part of my life. In addition to playing violin, I've been learning to play the Japanese Koto. It's a 13 stringed harp with movable bridges. It's such a beautiful sounding instrument like the violin.
The violin is a difficult instrument to make sound good. It takes time and commitment. I remember growing up, my Dachsund would howl when I practiced. Not sure if he was singing along or complaining. Playing violin is like singing, a way to express yourself. You can play many types of music from classical to jazz to bluegrass. The violin is something that can bring joy for a lifetime.
It's important to have a solid foundation; hand position, posture, ability to read music and rhythms, understand musical vocabulary etc. when learning violin. I'd like to provide that for your child. I don't believe in a one-size-fits-all approach to teaching. As I get to know your child, I can incorporate strategies that speak to his/her learning style at a pace that's both challenging and attainable. Parental involvement will be needed in order for your child to be successful. As you observe each lesson I have with your child, you will have a better idea of how to help them practice at home. Older students and adults also welcome.
Feel free to contact me with any questions, or to get started with your child's first lesson. My studio is located in south San Jose.
